Downtown Los Angeles Elopement

Elopement

Downtown LA is definitely one of my favorite places in Los Angeles. Not only does it offer delicious street vendors and interesting architecture, but it’s also a less crowded area compared to the rest of the city. The streets of DTLA are full of color and textured backdrops, as well as countless wedding venues that provide a blank slate for a couple’s imagination.

We were lucky, as we are every day in LA, to have perfect weather and pink sunset skies for this couple’s elopement. This area of DTLA features bridges, industrial backdrops, and expansive skies that make for stunning wedding photos.

The 6th Street Viaduct is probably the most popular bridge for photos in DTLA, but I prefer the bridge on 4th street.

Here are some tips for getting married at this location:

  • Sunset hour is ideal for capturing the best lighting across downtown. The sun can be harsh earlier in the day, so plan your portraits around sunset for softer, more flattering light.
  • Year-round weddings are possible in LA thanks to its consistently good weather. However, as a native Angeleno, I recommend avoiding June due to the less-than-ideal “June Gloom” weather.
  • Parking is relatively easy downtown, with plenty of lots available. Be prepared to walk between locations and possibly run across streets and bridges while cars are passing.
  • For the 4th Street Bridge, plan to take your photos during the last 10 minutes of sunset. The lighting is softer, and the sky transforms into the vibrant oranges and pinks that LA sunsets are known for. The best colors and textures appear during the first 10 minutes after the sun has set, so aim to be on the bridge just before the light fades. (Parking is usually available on nearby side streets, but remember, you can’t park on the actual bridge.)

Considering eloping in Los Angeles’s downtown? You can check out Katie and Adam’s full wedding at Hotel Per LA in DTLA. There have great hotel rooms to get ready in.
